Sindram-men

Concerning the family name the following observations can be made.

In some church books the first Sindram-men are indicated as Sinderam but on the painted bridal chest which is kept in the Bährenhof and descends from 1536 it states up to two times “Die Sindrams”; so it is thought that Sinderam has been a writing error.

According to the Förste Sindram-men the name Sindram would derive from the word Synrave and initially originate from Poland. In German Rave mean a corbel and this would explain the 2 corbels which are present on the shield on the bridal chest. Also, to return to the declaration of Mr Babou of the Indian embassy in Brussels, the name Sindram is Sanskrit, a language which is not only used by Hindoestani but also by gypsies, people whom have roamed throughout the whole of Europe, so that one origin does not have to exclude the other.

There is also an additional explanation of the name Sindram, which Marieke Sindram, the woman of Han Sindram, encountered in a newspaper in Baden-Baden while she stayed there during a health cure. The translation of that Article is as follows:

Sindram?

By all odds also this name is of early-Germanic origin. Judging by the result of the research it contains in the first component an old tribe word that frequently occurs. Old High-german word “sint” indicates “wardicipline, armyleader” as a basic principle; as that presently still can be recognisedin the word servant (old High-german gisindi = consequence, mooring rope). Name combinations with the word “sint” are already present since the sixth century in a very large number (in more than 200 different forms). At the second component of the word it concerns the word ram, which is in the preceding case is an abbreviation of the old High-german word that presents a corbel. The corbel, for this matter which sat as a saint bird on the shoulder of Odin, enjoyed a very particular worship and special honor, which resulted it to be taken up into “wishnames”.’

According to a relation of Maria Sindram, daughter of Emile and granddaughter of Johan Sindram and also confirmed by a relation of Ans Klein-Sindram, the name Sindram will come however from India. A conversation with the librarian of the embassy of India in Brussels confirmed the possibility of this origin. There is, as it happens, a province in the current Pakistan which carries the name Sind and further it is very common that the word ' ram ', originating from the god-driven Rama, is stuck behind a name: hence Sindram. By the way, there still is a very rich and well-known Tamil family (from South-India) that goes by the name of Sundaram only if this derives from Sindram cannot be confirmed. It is told that some Indians have emigrated to Germany and have established themselves there in the Harz.

Sindram More musings

I have read on this site the possibility that the family name Sindram comes from India, and from the now Pakistani province Sind. I have searched this province with the google internet search engine and discovered that that province actual is called Sindh, thus with an extra h.

Therefore I changed the name Sindram, very creatively into sindhram and then googled with this entry. This provided ' only ' 4 results, strikingly enough all 4 indian people. For example we have Aggarwal Surajbhan Sindhram, which does something in the city politics of the small indian town of Pune (or did). If you yourself use google with the name ‘Sindhram’, you can find the possible other names.
